Butcher Box is a unique company that started with the goal of making 100% grass-fed (and grass finished) meats accessible and affordable to everyone nationwide. It’s was really cool idea that has really taken off: a subscription box service that brings grass fed beef, organic chicken, and pork to your doorstep every month (two months, or three months, whatever your preference). It’s sort of like having a “cow share” that doesn’t require owning a chest freezer (you could probably use that extra space in your garage!) Along with the varying cuts of beef, chicken and pork, they also provide recipes to go along with the cuts. They’re almost exclusively Paleo recipes, too.

The mission of Butcher Box aligns with one of the many missions of PLEIJ Salon, Spa and Wellness, this being practical and affordable ways to help you improve you and your family’s health. Butcher Box provides a a Standard Box which includes 8-11 lbs. of beef, chicken and pork for just $129.00 with free delivery. Depending on your portion size, this is enough for 18-25 meals (this is based on a 6-8oz portion size but the recommended healthy portion size is 4-6oz, or about the size of the palm of your hand. Click here if you’re wondering if Red Meat Is Healthy but as referenced in our Food as Medicine article the best dietary advise is to “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants” … but food does include red meat). This works out to about $6.00 per meal. They also now offer The Big Box which includes double the meat at 19 lbs. of beef, chicken and pork for $238.00. That’s enough meat for at least 45 individual meals which works out to $4.95 per meal!

The company’s founder, Mike Salguero was first introduced to 100% grass-fed beef through a local farmer who sold ¼ and ½ shares of cattle. After trying it, he was instantly hooked. He preferred the more natural taste and was thrilled to discover the many health advantages grass-fed beef has over ordinary grain-fed beef. So his question became, “why isn’t everyone eating this?”

After doing some research, he discovered that not everyone has access to grass-fed beef, and even if people have access, their selection is often limited to just ground beef. This helps explain why just 1% of the total beef consumed in the United States is 100% grass-fed. The goal of Butcher Box is to make grass-fed beef more accessible than ever before. Why Eat Grass Fed?

Consumer Reports recommends you avoid conventionally raised beef from feedlots and instead eat 100% grass-fed beef.
  • The majority of beef (about 97 percent) for sale comes from “conventionally raised” cattle that begin their lives grazing in grassy pastures but are then shipped to, and packed into feedlots. That practice is considered to be the most cost-efficient way to fatten up cattle.” So while these animals were grass fed, allowing supermarkets and grocers to promote these meats as such, they typically are not grass finished.
  • “In the feedlot corn and soy are the primary foods. But the cows may also be fed candy, chicken coop waste, and the slaughterhouse remains of pigs and chickens.”
  • “One of the most significant findings is that beef from conventionally raised cows was more likely (2X) to have bacteria overall, as well as bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, than beef from sustainably raised cows (grass-fed).”

Where’s The Beef?

  • Only 1% of the total beef produced in the United States is 100% grass-fed.
  • 100% grass-fed farms lack the resources necessary to advertise and distribute their beef.

As a result it’s impossible for most people to get 100% grass-fed beef and the few who can are often confused with supermarket labels or limited to just ground beef. Just because a label says grass-fed doesn’t mean it’s 100% grass-fed beef (all cattle are grass-fed to start!).

Knowing where your beef comes from is no longer a ‘nice to know’, it’s a ‘need to know’.
