IPL Photofacial
IPL Photofacials work on a cellular level to treat the visible signs of premature aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, rough texture, sun damage, brown spots, visible veins and discoloration. The treatment is powered by Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) that delivers precise light through several layers of skin. The light produced by the IPL device generates heat when absorbed by the targeted tissue, which corrects imperfections in the skin. The device uses a real-time cooling system to keep your skin protected and to enhance your comfort during the treatment.
This procedure is also great for those who suffer with acne scars (including ice pick scars), uneven skin tone, rosacea, post inflammatory pigmentation and skin laxity.

During your consultation, our medical esthetician will carefully examine your face, neck, chest, and hands to check for the type of sun damage, vascular issues, and pigment irregularities that can be helped with IPL.

If you’ve tanned recently, we’ll ask you to wait a while before coming in for treatments.

During the treatment, your skin may appear slightly red and swollen. This is a normal reaction.
You might feel a slight warming of the skin and mild discomfort during treatment.

You’ll be asked to avoid scented lotions, exfoliants, and aggressive scrubbing.
It’s normal for freckles and sunspots to initially get darker and they usually flake off within one to three weeks.

Skin Needling Frequently Asked Questions
The best candidate is someone who has an uneven complexion with signs of discoloration or visible veins on their skin. Photofacial treatments also work to reduce the visible signs of aging by improving reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and by improving skin elasticity and firmness.
For safety reasons, you may not be able to get this treatment if you have/are:
- Metal or other implants in the treatment area
- Current or history of cancer
- Pregnant or nursing
- Any diseases that can be stimulated by light (e.g. epilepsy)
- History of disease that can be stimulated by heat (e.g. herpes)
- Poorly controlled endocrine disorders (e.g. diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome)
- Any active condition in the treatment area (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, rash)
- History of skin disorders, keloids, unusual wound healing, or excessively dry and/or sensitive skin
- Any surgical procedures within the past 3 months
- A tattoo or permanent makeup in the treatment area
- Excessively tanned skin
Photofacial treatments are powered by Intense Pulsed Light technology, which targets the pigment in your skin. They tend to work best for light to medium skin tones, specifically Fitzpatick Skin Types 1-5. The treatment may work on darker skin, but there is a higher risk of discoloration because darker skin has more pigment in it.
IPL Photofacials help to reduce acne scars by softening the fibrous scar tissue. As a result, the skin forms new collagen which helps to return the skin to its natural state and an even skin tone. A number of treatments will be required for deep scars, but we have had success with a wide range of scar types.
Because everyone has different types of skin and suffer from different skin conditions you will need to come in for a free consultation. Generally, for standard skin rejuvenation, 2-4 treatments are recommended. If you currently have acne, or acne related scarring then up to 6 treatments will be beneficial to you. However, we ask that you please see us in person so we can determine the best treatment course. You may require less or we may even recommend a peel if that is more appropriate.

The use of IPL Photofacials has been clinically proven to aid in a number of skin conditions. The treatment can soften wrinkles and fine lines, improve skin texture and tone, treat hyperpigmentation including brown spots, sun damage, freckles, and birthmarks, reduce scars and acne scars, improve chicken pox scars, tighten loose or sagging skin, improve firmness and elasticity, reduce redness and skin flushing including Rosacea, as well as pigmented and vascular lesions, treat spider veins and stretch marks. It is a great treatment to promote collagen production which aids in the repair of many skin problems.
IPL can be used on any area of the body. If you are interested in treating an area not included in our standard service offering, please discuss this with our professional and they will prepare a customized treatment for you.
Make sure your skin is clean. Do not apply any lotions, creams, or makeup before your session, and stop using any products that might irritate your skin 2-3 days before. You must also avoid tanning, including with self-tanners. You may be advised to shave the area before your treatment. Remove all jewelry around the area being treated.
IPL treatments are comfortable for most people. Prior devices required a great deal of energy to deliver the light energy deep enough into the skin to produce the desired effect. Modern, top IPL devices have changed how the energy is delivered through a process known as squaring the pulse.
Additionally, the applicator has a cooling feature built into it to make the treatment as comfortable as possible, but you might feel a bit of discomfort if you’re treating a more sensitive area, like the upper lip. If you find it too uncomfortable, let the operator know and they can adjust the treatment accordingly, or a topical aesthetician can be applied. That said, generally speaking the treatment is pain-free and the sensation of each zap of the device is similar to that of a warm rubber band snap.
Your IPL treatment will be performed by one of our medical estheticians. We will cleanse the treatment area to remove dirt, sunscreen and any contaminants.
When the IPL device is activated and applied to the treatment area sending its light energy into your skin, you may feel a sensation similar to the snapping of a warm rubber band on your skin. While this may be painful for some patients, most describe it as a tingly sensation. If you experience discomfort, we can anaesthetize the treatment areas using a topical anesthetic prior to proceeding with your treatment.
After your treatment, your skin typically feels warm and may also feel raw for 1-3 days. This sensation is similar to a bad sunburn. The skin usually feels very tight and dry for the first week. Sometimes you may also experience a little oedema (watery fluid) or light bruising. At 5-7 days after your treatment, we recommend a microdermabrasion to assist in removing any excess dead skin. This initial microdermabrasion is complimentary.
A course of microdermabrasion and/or LED treatments is also advantageous throughout your skin needling course. Typically we recommend 4 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart for noticeable rejuvenation. If treating scarring or stretch marks, then more may be required. This would be discussed with the therapist at your initial consultation.

It really depends on how your skin reacts to the treatment and how you care for your skin afterward. For example, if you protect your skin from the sun, the results will last longer. We recommend one touch-up session every 3-6 months, depending on your skin responds to the treatment.
There is no downtime. You can return to your daily schedule immediately after your treatment.
