7 Important Benefits of Exfoliation

There are many benefits of regular exfoliation and it is a key step in a well-rounded skincare routine. Aside from clearing away dry, dead, and dying skin cells, regular exfoliation increases the skin’s radiance, clarity and youthfulness… and that’s just the start!

Cellular turnover plays a significant role in how our skin looks and feels. In the world of skincare, it’s the cause behind exfoliants, skin peels, and more intensive professional treatments like micro and hydrodermabrasion.

Cellular turnover describes how quickly skin produces new cells, or how quickly new skin cells migrate from the deepest layers to the top layers of skin. Slowed cellular turnover is triggered by a decrease in collagen synthesis and elastin (the building blocks of healthy, taught skin), which leads to a loss of skin vibrancy, lift, elasticity, and firmness. The natural aging process causes this decrease in collagen and elastin.

Natural aging isn’t the only process that slows cellular turnover. Lifestyle choices like smoking, or spending too much time in the sun, a stressful lifestyle, poor diet and nutrient deficiencies can cause cellular turnover to slow a lot earlier than our genetics would determine.

As cellular turnover slows, dead cells accumulate on the surface of skin causing sagging and collapse of structure or what we see dull dry skin with more lines, wrinkles, and deeper folds. Slower cellular turnover can also trigger pores to enlarge and expand as they become filled, or clogged, with a mixture of dead skin cells and oil. Bacteria can become trapped causing blemishes and breakouts, a contributing factor to adult acne. Discolored and irregular cells can also become trapped causing spots, discoloration, and sometimes more serious skin conditions.

When the outer surface of skin is made of newer skin cells, skin feels softer and looks more luminous with less lines and imperfections. By maintaining an average 28-day or faster replacement cycle through healthy lifestyle choices and a regular skin care routine that addresses the basics of skin, your skin will appear smoother and more youthful.

Exfoliation serves to help speed up the normal shedding cycle. Exfoliating rids the skin of it’s dull, outer layer as well as all of the flaws that reside therein such as; fine lines, dark spots and blemishes. In addition, your skin-care products can better penetrate your skin. Here are our top four reasons to exfoliate on a regular basis:

1. It Unclogs Pores & Helps Prevent Acne

When you exfoliate your skin, you’re effectively unclogging your pores. Sweeping away that dead and dry skin, along with all the other surface impurities that might remain on your skin after cleansing stops it from making its way into your pores and causing stubborn stoppages in the form of whiteheads, blackheads and breakouts. These are two skin issues that are difficult to get rid of, which is why exfoliating is so important. It stops them before they even have a chance to appear. Dead skin clogs the pores, so when sebaceous glands produce oil, it’s ‘stuck’ under the dry skin. This causes breakouts because there is nowhere for the oil to go.

Environ Sebu-Lac Lotion contains a special combination of Lactic Acid exfoliators and moisturizers to help combat breakouts and assist in improving the appearance, texture, and tone of acne prone skin. Environ Sebu-Clear Masque further helps exfoliate the skin and reduce congestion while directly targeting acne with Saliculic Acid. It also contains Kaolin Clay to absorb excess oils and impurities from deep within pores.

2. It Evens Skin Tone

Those with dark spots, rough texture, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars know how frustrating these conditions can be to treat. Exfoliants polish the skin, leaving it with a softer, smoother texture. It’s like using sandpaper on coarse, unevenly textured wood—step-by-step it becomes smooth. Exfoliation also serves to minimize pigmentation and the dark spots that come from age, sun exposure, acne, pregnancy and changes in your hormonal balance. Each time you exfoliate, you’re removing the top layer of skin and breaking up pigmented cells, thereby diminishing the appearance of discoloration allowing skin to appear more uniform over time.

Try Environ Vita-Botanical Mela-Fade Serum. This daily, leave-on clarifying cream contains the most stable form of vitamin C (ascorbyl tetraisopalitate) to help improve the appearance of sun damage, uneven skin tone / pigmentation, fine lines and capillaries. Helps to reduce the signs of premature aging without irritation or redness.

3. It Boosts Circulation and Lymphatic Drainage

Exfoliation’s benefits, include stimulating lymphatic drainage for internal cleansing and stimulation of oxygen-rich blood to feed and nourish the skin’s surface. The former is a form of skin detoxification, working to remove toxins and other unhealthy debris. The latter boosts cellular health to reveal glowy, radiant skin.

4. It Fights the Signs of Aging

Aside from increased circulation, exfoliation also boosts the skin’s radiance in another way. As we age, cellular turn over and our skin’s ability to naturally exfoliate slows down. When the skin is laden with dead cells, lines, wrinkles and dryness become more apparent. Removing dead skin increases cellular turnover, revealing fresher, brighter, younger looking skin, and keeping it at the skin’s surface. In terms of appearance, this results in that ultra-dewy and baby-faced complexion we all strive for.

5. It Stimulates Collagen Synthesis

Finally, regular exfoliation helps to stimulate collagen synthesis to improve the skin’s texture, integrity, and keep it looking plump, tight, and young. In this way, exfoliating offers further anti-aging benefits, helping lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Cue Environ Revival Masque. Specifically formulated with a revolutionary combination of three powerful ingredients this “facelift in a jar” assists in enhancing the skin’s overall loop and feel, as well as it’s resilience. Asiatic Acid: Used for centuries in ancient traditional healing, research has shown that it stimulates growth factors which are important for skin regeneration. Lactic Acid: A powerful promoter of the natural hydrating factors in the skin and is known to lighten uneven skin tone and hyper-pigmentation while smoothing the skin’s surface. Mandelic Acid: Has powerful anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and helps to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. The product is specially formulated to work in synergy with the Environ Vitamin A Moisturizers including the Vita-Antioxidant AVST Mositurizers.

6. It Helps Other Skincare Products Penetrate Deeper

Removing the outer layer of dead skin cells and having your pores unclogged and debris allows your skincare products to penetrate more deeply and effectively. Exfoliation helps serums, moisturizers, and growth factors penetrate deeper into the skin. When something that’s rich in nourishing ingredients penetrates deeper, it’s able to work more effectively which is why exfoliation should always be included in every skincare routine. Dead skin basically becomes a barrier between your skin and your skincare products. By removing it, you allow everything to work much better.

7. It Helps Reduce Ingrown Hairs

When you have your legs or bikini line waxed you are pulling the hair from the root. Although the hair will eventually grow back, it will be weaker and sometimes cannot pierce through the skin (instead curling back into the skin and growing underneath) in which case a red spot will appear at the hair follicle. This is an ingrown hair – Exfoliating the affected area you will remove dead skin and allow the hair to break through the skin.

Environ Derma-Lotion is a lactic acid based body lotion containing medium levels of Alpha Hydroxy Acids which gently exfoliates, improving skin’s tone and texture, and helping to serve as a preventative measure against ingrown hairs.

How Often Should You Exfoliate

As for how often you should be exfoliating, listen to your skin. Some prefer chemical exfoliants over physical ones and vice versa, however, this should be dictated by your specific needs. That said, we can offer some general guidelines… a physical exfoliant (something that contains beads or small grains) can be used once or twice a week – both on the face and body. A gentle chemical exfoliant may be used daily depending on its strength. We recommend that people with Rosacea exfoliate no more than once a week. But be sure to listen to your skin. If it is ever sensitive or red after exfoliating, reduce your frequency. While it’s important to remove dead skin, it’s also important not to strip away the skin’s natural barriers, and good balance is essential.
