Hair Replacement vs Hair Restoration
Studies show that when a man has hair that he can be proud of, he’s more confident in social situations, more self-assured in romantic endeavors, and more optimistic when it comes to life in general. Studies show that better looking people earn up to 15% more money – it’s just how it is in life. Look good, feel good, live well!
At PLEIJ Salon, our philosophy on hair, and the decision to address your hair loss is simple, it’s all about maintaining your sense of self and self confidence rather than allowing the loss to negatively impact your perception of yourself, or how others perceive you (while this may be considered less important, when it comes to securing the best job and advancing in your career, or attracting a mate, let’s be honest.. the opinions of others is important).

What Are the Options to Overcome Hair Loss?
The issue of hair loss, hair thinning and baldness has had the attention of men for centuries, even millennia. From “snake oil” charlatans to specialist doctors, hair loss treatments and solutions have ranged from the absurd and useless, to the effective and proven methods widely used today.
The most popular cosmetic solutions to overcome balding are hair restoration and hair replacement.
What is the Difference Between Hair Restoration and Hair Replacement?
At first glance, these terms appear to be one in the same — both provide the client the hair that they are missing. However, which really serves the client’s needs? The answer to that question really depends on what the client is looking for, their budget, and other needs.
HAIR RESTORATION A.K.A HAIR TRANSPLANT – FUE OR FUT
Hair restoration is also known as a hair transplant, and involves replacing the hair that has been lost. This is achieved by relocating hair from one location (typically the back of the scalp) and transplanting it to another (usually the top of the scalp).
Effectively, you are taking hair follicles from high density areas of the scalp to relocate them to less densely populated regions. It’s important to understand that there is no net gain of hair follicles. The hair that has been removed doesn’t regrow due to the removal of the follicle and worst yet the follicles don’t always take and some are lost in the process.
To be clear, Hair Transplantation is a surgical procedure and one that requires anesthetic, usually local anesthetic. It is also one that includes downtime and patients typically need to take at least 10 days off work to recover from the procedure. The scalp will remain pink with dots for a few weeks where the new hair was transplanted and it can take at least 9 months until you see a reasonable result. When the hair is transplanted, it falls out not long after the procedure, lies dormant for a time and then begins to regrow. General guidance from medical practitioners suggest that it takes a full 18 months to see the full net benefits. Usually a minimum of two significant procedures are required to see a good result.
SOME BENEFITS OF A HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE ARE:
- Natural hair look
- Natural growth
- Improved self-esteem
THE CONS OF A HAIR TRANSPLANT:
- Risk for scarring and infection
- Can be expensive
- Can lose the transplanted hair the the procedure doesn’t follow specific protocols or the doctor and technicians lack skill
- Other areas of your head can bald causing an odd look or requiring more surgery
- Bald spot on the crown – usually people don’t have enough hair to fill in the crown
- Lifetime Medication to keep the original (non-transplanted) hair growing on top
Though there are clear benefits to hair restoration, it might not be the healthiest or best option for some clients.
Hair Replacement for Men
Hair restoration, also known as hair transplantation is a surgical procedure in which hair is harvested from the back and/or sides of the scalp (donor site) to areas that are thinning or bald on the front, top, or crown of the scalp (recipient site). There are two effective types of hair transplant, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and automated Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) using NeoGraft or ARTAS.
Effectively, you are taking hair from high density areas of the scalp and relocating them to less densely populated regions. It is important to understand that there is no net gain of follicles and rather you will be left with fewer hair follicles at the location from which the hair was donated.
Furthermore, Hair Transplantation is a surgical procedure that requires anesthetic, usually a local anesthetic as well as a recovery period which typically consists of at least 10 days off work.. The scalp will remain pink with dots for a few weeks where the new hair was transplanted and it can take at least 9 months until you see a reasonable result. Finally, not everyone is a candidate for Hair Transplants. A board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in hair restoration (specifically NeoGraft or ARTAS), can best determine your candidacy for hair replacement. The surgeon will consider such factors as the cause of your hair loss, your age, the amount of your donor supply, the severity of your hair loss and your desired goals. That said, men with male pattern baldness who have an adequate and stable donor hair supply in the back of their scalp are typically the best candidcates.

Hair Replacement for Men
Hair replacement for men, on the other hand, includes hair systems, toupees, wigs, and Hairskeen’s hair replacement solution. These are fitted, colored, styled, and often bonded semi-permanently to the client’s skin cells. Because of the advancement of technology and the call for better solutions to hair loss and how undetectable this solution looks today, many do not realize how natural and prevalent hair replacement is today. “You never see the good ones, so you never get the positive reinforcement they deserve” says Raphael Perrier, Creator and Artistic Director of Hairskeen.
SIX BENEFITS OF HAIR REPLACEMENT:
- Instant results
- No surgery needed and thus no risk for infection
- Affordable cost
- Natural look
- Improved self-confidence
- Many utilize real, human hair
SOME OF THE CONS OF HAIR REPLACEMENT:
- Clients can feel like they are wearing a wig — depending on the solution they choose
- Require regular maintenance and cleaning
What Hair Loss Solution Should You Choose?
Though the end result, in theory, is the same, these two methods of allow you to enjoy a full head of hair are quite different: one is surgical and the other is non-invasive. Additionally, a hair transplant offers no guarantees as to how it will look, if it will work, and how it will perform in the future. Hair replacement allows you to try it out and if you determine it isn’t for you, it can be easily removed. Besides the investment of your time and money, both of which are substantially lower in the case of replacement, there is no risk.
But what is best ultimately depends on you and what you want. In many cases, hair replacement is the preferred option and more effective option, or the initial options chosen by men experiencing hair loss.
